12/14/11---ACT Practice Test

Today we took the ACT math practice test in what will be test like conditions. Fun?? Maybe not, but research shows that student's scores increase with every test attempt. So everyone's test scores will be better next time. "You're welcome." Tomorrow we will go over our chp 8/10 tests (they are in power school) and talk about some additional ACT test tips. Friday we celebrate!! If you were not in class today or if you need additional ACT practice remember there is a link on the left with more tips and problems. Have a great Wednesday!! Monday--the last one this year

Today we reviewed for our test on chp 8/10. The test is tomorrow. We will not have any homework this week!!! YEAH!! Test Tuesday--ACT Practice test on Wednesday. Review Thursday and celebrate Friday (hopefully). If you are still questioning please see the review sheet from last Thursday. All the answers with work were posted last week!! Be ready (thinking maps in hand) when you come to class tomorrow.

Today we did a trigonometry scavenger hunt!! Love this activity because it helps us see which angles and sides are which and helps to set up our story problems for our test. Our test has been moved to next week Tuesday! Please plan accordingly. We will also be taking a practice ACT test on Wednesday of next week. Only 5 more days of school until VACATION!! Can't wait. Hey Boyer and I are both at a conference today on using websites even more effectively for our classrooms!! Just wait till we get back with all of our fun new knowledge!! Today you are to 1. finish your geometry worksheets for 2nd and 3rd blocks--remember the answer key is online on Friday's post--check it there. 2. Add the radians to degrees info and graph info to your thinking map before your test on Friday 3. The subs will give you a new Trig Review packet. Do it!! The answers are here, but you must show your work!! Don't just copy the answers or you won't know what to do on the test Friday!! If you need help before the test (you know who you are!) please see Boyer during reading time on Tuesday or Rumsey after school on Tuesday or Rumsey at reading time on Thursday or Boyer after school--if you can find her..might be a fun game..where's Boyer. Do whatever you please but get help BEFORE the test!!! Reminder all toys for Toys for Tots are due by Thursday!! The winning class gets a party!!

12/2 Happy Friday

So glad that it is Friday!!! Today we took a quiz over the first part of our trig info. Then we worked on a geometry review packet in an effort to do some more brush up before the ACT test in the spring (it will be here before we know it!!). Geometry worksheet and answer key part 1 and two No new notes or video today. Next week we will be gone on Monday so we will be doing additional review of trig then Tuesday we are out and about on a scavenger hunt. The rest of the week will be spent reviewing our Trig for a test on Friday. 12/12--we are taking the ACT math portion--just like the real test--60 minutes 60 questions, no help no breaks just go. We will run bubble sheets and see how they do on that portion. We will then direct some of our learning the remainder of the semester to make sure we cover items that were missed. We will start chp 12 before break and then just have to finish it and chp 9 before the final in January--wow that went fast. Have a fabulous weekend and see you on Tuesday!!

I can't believe there are only 11 more days before Christmas Break!! ugh-we have so much to do!! Today we took notes on the conversion from Radians to Degrees and back. We also took notes on graphing the sine and cosine curves both by hand and on our graphing calculators.

We did a lot of review today. First we made thinking maps of the info that we have covered thus far (so we can use them on our quiz tomorrow). See example

Tuesday 11/29

Law of Sines and Law of Cosines--we started today with a review sheet on Pythagorean Thm and SOh Cah Toa. We also took notes on 8.6 and 8.7. Video part 1, part 3 of our lesson. Homework: finish worksheet listed above.

Monday, 11/28--trig

Today we reviewed right triangle trigonometry--soh cah toa. See notes attached. Due to technical difficulties our class video notes are not available. Please refer to this you tube version in stead. Our homework assignment was page 443 1, 3,and 4.

Tuesday--the day BEFORE break

Wow...we are very excited about having a 5 day weekend. It was very hard to focus today and get our work done, but remember it is DUE on Monday--no late work will be accepted. get it done!!!

As a reminder you may choose to present for extra credit. Extra credit up to 20 points can be earned for well prepared and rehearsed presentations.

I am so excited about our two day week and about our mathematician project. Please see attached sheet. We worked in the media center today doing research and will continue to have research and work time tomorrow. These projects are due on Monday and there are NO exceptions. If you know you will be gone on Monday turn yours in before you leave for break!! Students may present them for extra credit ont he Monday we come back from break!! We will be grading them using exit standards for quality, self directed, problem solving and speaking if applicable. Do a great job and increase your test average!!

Wednesday 11/16

We handed back chpater 7 tests today. Check out your grade and any missing assignments in powerschool. Then we worked on our Mid term review form yesterday (handout and answer guide on Monday's post). Mid term exam on Friday--unless you are going to be gone on Friday then plan to take on Thursday. Monday and Tuesday we are in the computer lab. Happy mid week. Only 4 more school days till Thanksgiving Break!!

Tuesday 11/15--Opening Day

Good to luck to all the hunters!! Hope you had a great day! Today we took the test over chp 7 and then started looking at the review packets for the mid-term exam which will be this Friday. Next week we will be doing a project on a famous mathematician which should help students who have grades which are starting to fall a little. We did more review today for our test on Chapter 7 tomorrow. I tried to post the review sheet answers but the copy machines are still not functioning properly so I apologize. If there are a couple of problems you need to go over with me please see me tomorrow during reading time or between classes and we can go over them!! Remember we will be taking our mid-term on Friday and then working on a project Monday and Tuesday of next week. If you use your time well you should not have any work for over Thanksgiving Break!! 11/10/11--the first snow this season!!

I really don't like winter, but I enjoy sharing the first flakes each year with exchange students who have never experienced it before. Today 2nd block we were able to share Vinnie's first snow!! He was very excited. We even took his picture so he could text it home. Very excited for him!!
On a math note, we had a kind of math buffet today. We talked about projectile motion (which will make Mr. Groh happy for sure!), and we looked at zeros and finding equations for polynomials with degrees higher than 2. See notes and video for info.
Homework assignment: p. 382 #7 part a and b, p 402 1 a and c, 3 a,c,and d, 6 b and c, and p 408 1,2,3,4(a and b) and 8a.

So sorry I am not there today!! I have two sick kids--and you know they must really be sick or I would have sent them to school anyway :) Today we are going to learn and use the quadratic formula. It should be easy to learn with the attached videos and notes. I will also be attaching worksheets (with answer keys) that will be handed out in class. They are all due on Monday. Do your best!! Pay attention to the videos and the work should come. If in doubt use your resources--another teacher, google, youtube, this website, email or text me, but do something, don't choose to fail! Thursday 10/27

We did move our test from tomorrow until next week Tuesday to give everyone a few more days to master the exponent and log properties. Just a reminder that the students who made thinking maps for exponents (last Friday) and logs (which we are doing tomorrow) will be allowed to use them on the test. Today we worked on three more log/exponent worksheets--we have done a ton of worksheets. I will attach them below this evening. Tomorrow we will do the practice test for our test on Tuesday and make that 2nd thinking map.

Wednesday 10/26/11

We spent the entire hour reviewing logs and exponents! See handouts below. If you are still struggling, I suggest that you rewatch the video from yesterday, look on google or you tube for additional help, or look at the link on yesterday's post for more info!! We will be postponing our test on Chapter 5 until Tuesday so that we have a few more days to digest all of the new information!! Be sure to still keep working and doing your best!!

Tuesday 10/25/11

Today we did notes on 5.6 and 5.7--properties of logarithms. Love Logs!! We used our calculators to look at the graphs of logarithmic and exponential functions (and their transformations). We then looked at the notes properties of logs and did some examples. Attached are the notes (see left) and video of the lesson.

Today we did a lot of review with exponents including talking about solving with our calculators--REMEMBER--IF IN DOUBT USE YOUR CALCULATOR TO SOLVE--PUT BOTH PARTS INTO Y= AND FIND THE POINT OF INTERSECTION!!!!!
We also talked about tackling every problem and not giving up on ourselves--and especially don't ever tell anyone that you are not intelligent!!

Then we took notes on 5.4-story problems with exponents and did page 263-1,2,3 and 11

Today we did a few things:

1. We reviewed 5.2 and 5.3
Specifically the rule for a negative exponent (it does not make the answer negative--it just flips the base upside down but keeps the exponent with each part of the base)

2. Worked on worksheet 5.2 and 5.3

3. Created a thinking map-- "Properties of Exponents"

Exponents!! Today we started with our unit on exponents and logarithms. We reviewed the exponent rules from Algebra One and then added a few new uses. Our assignment was p 248 numbers 1,2,3,4,5,6 and 13. Special Reminder: negative exponents flip our numbers over (use the reciprocal).

Monday after Homecoming and Parent Teacher Conferences
We took a test on Thursday, so today we did remediation for all students who received less than 70& and enrichment for those who scored over 70%. Conferences are this evening from 5-7:30. New grades including the test from last week are in power school. Tomorrow we are going to be doing a review of the first 3 chapters as I will be at a conference for AP Calculus. Friday, 9/30

Happy Blustery Friday!! Tests are graded and in power school. Class averages ranged from 72.2% to 88.1%. Not too bad guys!! Today we did some remediation with those who did not do as well, and had some enrichment for those who did well. In addition there was a little time for making up missing work. Monday we will begin Chapter 4--families of functions!! Can't wait!!
